All guests arrive in high style; dressed in formal gowns and tuxedos with their identity... masked!  In the early hours of the evening, enjoy traditional ballroom dancing with professionals followed by a newer generation of music that progresses throughout the night towards the 21st century.  Throughout the evening, performers will be found strolling through the ballroom, entertaining all with an array of unique skills.  However, be on your guard for a few twists such as the potential sighting of a Prima ballerina's transformation as she breaks out into a rock and roll inspired number! History of the Masquerade

First noted in Italy during the 15th century Renaissance, masquerade balls were costumed public festivities that were especially popular in Venice.

They were generally elaborate dances held for members of the upper classes, and have been associated with the tradition of the Venetian carnival.

Such balls became common throughout mainland Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries.

A Swiss count is credited with having introduced the Venetian fashion of a semi-public masquerade ball to London in the 18th century, with the first being held at the Haymarket Opera House. Masquerade balls were occasionally turned into a game to spice up the evening beyond a dance, with the host encouraging guests to arrive masked and costumed. Throughout the evening, all guests had to figure out one anothers' identities. This added an exciting twist to the evening and is often still present in the Venetian balls we all enjoy today!
